Britain & Ireland - Days 1 - 6

Sorry for the delay in posting folks!  This tour is stock full of things to do and see and I just haven't had much time to sit down and write out my post.  Here is the first update of a few that I will be attempting to do over the remaining for days of my trip and probably after I get back.

Days 1- 6

Welcome to London!

Globus Highlights of Britain and Ireland Tour

Day 1
Sunday August 26, 2012 – London, England
I arrived into London at Heathrow Airport around 8am after a long and pretty uncomfortable flight from Chicago on American Airlines.  My recent overseas flight on Delta was noticeably better.  We had a very long walk from our gate to the passport control and customs area.  However, contrary to many recent warnings, I breezed through customs in a good 5 minutes or so.  I picked up my transfer through Globus and was promptly delivered to my hotel, the London Hilton Metropole.  Upon arrival, I found the friendly Globus local representatives who assisted with my check-in process and provided some essential tour information for my time in London.  I was very surprised and pleased to find that the hotel was prepared to allow me to access my room at such an early hour.
After delivering my luggage to my room and cleaning myself up a bit, I set off to explore the nearby area.  Our hotel is located NW of the main city attractions near the Edgware Rd. Tube station.  The area has a large Middle Eastern influence and population.  A walk down Edgware Rd. will have you finding many Middle Eastern restaurants and shops.  Mixed in among these businesses is of course, my first stop…Starbucks. J  With astronomical wifi costs at the hotel, Starbucks will become a frequent stop throughout the trip.  After grabbing a coffee and checking emails, I walked south down Edgware to Oxford St. for a bit of shopping.  This area is very similar to the Magnificent Mile (North Michigan Avenue) in Chicago.  The street is lined with many major clothing store chains and department stores.  I popped into Selfridges luxury department store for a few minutes to torture myself and then made a visit to the more affordable Primark department store.  It’s a good thing that the line was a mile long because I could have got myself into some trouble here.  I then headed back to the hotel to get cleaned up for our group cocktail party.
This evening we gathered as a group to meet and greet and enjoy a few cocktails together.  It was great to put faces to names.  This was also my first opportunity to meet my co-host Ellen, from our Boca Raton corporate office.  Afterward, I relaxed around the hotel and got myself organized for the upcoming day.

Day 2
Monday August 27, 2012 – London, England
Today we started our day early with breakfast at the hotel and then set off on our city tour of London.  Our guide took us by some of the iconic sights of London including Hyde Park, Harrods, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and then along the River Thames.  We then made a stop and toured through St. Paul’s Cathedral which was gorgeous.  With its beautiful dome and complex architecture, it was certainly not just another church.  We then made our way over to the Buckingham Palace.  Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get up through the crowd to see the actual Changing of the Guards.  We did however get a great view of the guards coming through the nearby gates and making their way toward the palace.   Next we headed back to our hotel, passing by the majestic Wellington Arch and Marble Arch.  By the end of this first tour, we all knew that we had a great group of people and could look forward to a wonderful 15 days of touring together.
After a quick lunch, I opted to join most of the group on a unique tour of the public rooms inside Buckingham Palace and the Royal Mews.  Our timing to the trip was lucky as the opportunity to enter and tour these rooms in Buckingham Palace is only available for around 6 weeks out of the year while the Queen is away on holiday.  It was wonderful to see how Her Majesty and the rest of the Royal Family live.  Unfortunately, all photography was prohibited in the interior of the palace.  The Royal Mews, which houses many of the Queen’s horse drawn carriages and a few limousines, was very interesting to see as well.  It is wonderful to see that such old traditions are still maintained.
This evening some of our group chose to take a Taste of London Illumination Cruise on the Thames.  I elected to explore the city on my own instead and try to get some better pictures of the sites since my bus tour photos did not come out well.  I took the Tube from hotel down to the Westminster area and got some great photos of the Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.  Then I hopped on the Tube again and rode over to the Tower of London area to get some great shots of the Tower Bridge at dusk.  Next I rode up to Picadilly Circus and enjoyed a nice dinner on Leicester Square to finish off the night.

Day 3
Tuesday August 28, 2012 – Hampton Court – Salisbury – Bath, England
This morning we woke up bright early again (as we will every day) and met up with our tour director Carmel to start our road trip around Britain and Ireland.  We set out from London heading southeast and made out first stop at Henry VIII’s Hampton Court to explore the beautiful Ornamental Gardens.  I was surprised to find that the gardens here were, in my opinion, more beautiful than anything I saw at Versailles.  Next we drove across to the quaint town of Salisbury to visit its beautiful cathedral and do some shopping.  We then drove out to the nearby countryside to take in the ancient druid remains at Stonehenge.  This was one of my most anticipated visits and it did not disappoint.  Having been told by numerous people that it always rains when visiting Stonehenge, I was please to find that our group brought a change to that trend with quite a beautiful day!  Our next stop was Bath where we took in another beautiful cathedral and toured the remains of their ancient Roman bath.  This was one of the best Roman sites that I have visited so far in my travels.  They have succeeded greatly in maintaining the remaining structure and have added illustrations and digital imagery in the structures to complete the picture of what the bath originally looked like.  We also had some free time in Bath to visit some shops and enjoy a coffee, tea or ice cream.
After a long but exciting day, we continue on into Wales for our overnight stop in Newport.  We did not visit any sites here (I don’t think there really are any).  We checked in at the Hilton Newport and cleaned ourselves up a bit before meeting in the lounge for a cocktail and then dinner, compliments of Globus.

Day 4
Wednesday August 29, 2012 – Cardiff, Wales – Irish Sea crossing – Waterford, Ireland
This morning we set out for a quick stop in nearby Cardiff, Wales.  Here we had free time to take in the majestic Cardiff Castle.  Some folks entered the castle to take full tours while the others and I took it in from the outside and then spent the rest of our time visiting the shops on the town’s lovely pedestrian walkways.
We then continued on to the port to board our ferry for crossing the Irish Sea.  Our crossing was…an experience.  We were unlucky to find that the seas were abnormally choppy today making our ride very rough.  Many of the travelers in our group found themselves battling extreme sea sickness for much of the ride.  Luckily, I was one of the few that did not suffer from the experience.
We arrived into Ireland at the port of Rosslare and proceeded on to our next overnight stop in the Viking town of Waterford.  Here we checked into the Granville Hotel, which is so far the favorite of most everyone in the group.  It is a beautiful little hotel on the riverfront with beautifully decorated rooms and a great pub and restaurant.
Before turning in for the night, I joined some other members of group for my first beer of the trip, a Smithwicks, at a nearby pub.

Day 5
Thursday August 30, 2012 – Waterford – Blarney – Killarney
This morning tour in Waterford took us to the House of Waterford Crystal.  Here we were taken on a guided tour of the factory where we learned about the different lines of crystal and observed the local workers as they created the world famous works of art.  Afterward, we were given a good amount of time to shop in their showroom where much of our group treated themselves to some extravagant crystal pieces.
Next we drove on through the port city of Cork to our next stop in nearby Blarney.  This was another one of my most anticipated visits as we would have the opportunity here to kiss the famous Blarney Stone.  The legend says that anyone who kisses the Blarney Stone will be blessed with the gift of eloquence.  What I didn’t know ahead of time was that the stone is houses in the wall at the top of the Blarney Castle.  With a very long line for the activity, we were a bit concerned about whether we had enough time to wait and still make our meeting time 1hr and 45mins later.  Since we were advised by the ticket seller that the wait was approximately one hour, we decided to go for it.  Well, once you get to a certain point in the line, there is no turning back as you are navigating the steep and narrow stairways of the castle.  The wait ended up being about 2hrs and 15mins which made us about 30 minutes late for our meeting time.  Thankfully, most of the group and our tour director were very understanding and did not give us too much trouble for being late.  I do have to say though that I don’t yet feel any more eloquent than before!  You would think that kissing the stone on my birthday would surely guarantee that it worked!

From Blarney we continue on to our next stop in Killarney where we stayed for two nights.  Killarney is a wonderful town of shops and pubs located in the southwest corner of Ireland.  In recent years it has been voted as the favorite town in Ireland in a number of publications.  Tonight much of the group took part in an optional excursion to Tralee for dinner and a show at the Siamsa Tire National Folk Theatre.  I opted out of this one and enjoyed a nice evening on my own with some shopping and dinner of traditional Irish stew and a Guinness.  J

Day 6
Friday August 31, 2012 – Killarney – Ring of Kerry Excursion
This morning the full group gathered for an included 100-mile panoramic drive around the Ring of Kerry.  This is Irelands southwestern most tip.  It is one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland with beautiful lakes, bays and coastlines and remote islands.   We made a lunch stop at the scenic Scarriff Inn and then continued on around the ring to Lady's View where we took some fabulous shots of the Lakes of Killarney.
Upon our return to Killarney, a few folks took a horse-drawn jaunting car ride through the nearby park and visited the local castle.  I opted to relax for a bit to prepare for this evenings excursion, a visit to wonderful hole in the wall pub – the Shantie.  Here we enjoyed some traditional live Irish music from locals Paddy & Sadie, a couple of pints and some great craic (merriment – pronounced like “crack”).  It is Ireland, after all, “Where the craic is mighty!”

Britain & Ireland Tour - August 2012

Well it's that time again!  I am about to embark on another European adventure.  This time I will jaunting around Britain and Ireland alongside a large group of Bluegreen Vacation Club owners.  We'll be starting our adventure this Sunday in London for a couple of nights.  We'll then make our way west through Wales and will hop over to Ireland.  From there we will head north into Scotland and then back around to London.  Along the way, I am hoping to experience the best of Britain and Ireland including Buckingham Palace, Stonehenge, the Ring of Kerry, and maybe I will even get to kiss the Blarney Stone! :)

I fly out on Saturday and will be blogging as often as time and internet access allow.  Check back soon for updates of my journey!

France - Days 11 – 14 – Paris, France…and next up?

Wednesday, August 1, 2012 – Paris, France
This morning we woke up early in Paris and joined the group from our cruise for a panoramic bus tour of the city of Paris.  Our bus took us by the major sights including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, Notre Dame and Luxembourg Gardens.  After lunch, Dad and I ventured out on our own to get a more detailed look at the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde.  We also took a nice stroll along the Champs Elysees and popped into a few shops.  Afterward we visited the l’Orangerie museum to check out some impressionist paintings including the famous Water Lilies paintings by Monet.  This is an easily forgotten museum that should not be missed!
We were pretty worn out tonight after such a long day of walking and enjoyed a convenience store dinner back at the hotel. J

Thursday, August 2, 2012 – Paris, France
Today is the first of our two days of fully independent sightseeing.  We slept in a bit and then decided to make our way by metro (subway) up to the Montmartre area of town on the right bank to visit the beautiful Sacre-Coeur Basilica and check out the artist markets.  If you’re looking for a great place to get a view across the city of Paris and don’t feel like waiting in line at the Eiffel Tower, this is the place to go.  From atop the hill you can see all of the major sights in Paris.
After finishing up in Montmartre, we made our way to the Ile de la Cite island on the Seine River to explore Notre Dame Cathedral.  Having already had my fill of old churches, I thought that my visit to Notre Dame may have been ruined, but I was mistaken.  The grandeur of the high ceilings, stained-glass windows and flying buttresses still amazed me after everything else I had already seen.
We then moved back over to the right bank and explored the Louvre museum.  Along the way, we ran across one of three "Paris Plaige" spots where the city has transformed the banks of the Seine into a beach.  A person could really spend an entire day or more exploring the Louvre.  We decided to focus on seeing the pieces that we were most interested in only to save time.  We explored the Egyptian antiquities first, and then made our way around to see the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory, and many others.
After the Louvre, we had a quick lunch in a cafĂ© and then moved on to the Musee d’Orsay to see some more impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces.  Here the main highlights were Van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhone (which we’d seen the site of in Arles earlier in the trip) as well as a number of familiar works from Delacroix, Renoir, Manet and Cezanne.
By the time we finished up at the d’Orsay we were exhausted again and headed back to the hotel to rest.  This evening we cleaned up and went out for a nice dinner at a cafĂ© in the Montparnasse district where our hotel was located.

Friday, August 3, 2012 – Paris, France
Today was our last full day in Paris and our most important task was to make our way out of town by train to visit Louis XIV’s Palace at Versailles.  This was an amazing site.  With the ornate golden gates, excessively decorated interiors, and enormous gardens, we were blown away.  Check out some of the pictures to get a better idea of what I mean!
After finishing up at Versailles, we travelled back to Paris and made a quick stop to visit the Pompidou Centre which houses the largest museum of modern art in Europe.  The building itself was a sight to see with its “high-tech” architecture and we also enjoyed the nearby Stravinsky Fountain.  Inside we saw fabulous works from modern artists including Kandinsky, Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Dali and Andy Warhol, just to name a few.  I think this museum was my favorite of all that we visited.  After our visit to the Pompidou Centre, we stopped to enjoy a quick drink at a nearby Starbucks and then made our way back to the hotel to rest for a bit.
This evening, we took the metro over to the Eiffel Tower to enjoy the evening light show.  We enjoyed viewing the tower from both the Champs de Mars and the Trocadero points of view.  We found a wonderful restaurant, the CafĂ© du Trocadero, on the nearby square and enjoyed a very nice dinner together for our final evening.  From the restaurant, we were able to see the Eiffel Tower light show which was a nice experience.  After we finished eating, we made our way back toward the tower to enjoy the second light show in full view to finish off our evening and grab some pictures.

The end! L  It’s time to head back home.  We were sad to leave to ready to get home and relax for a bit before going back to work.  It was a very long travel day.
It was great to explore a country in such detail alongside my Dad.  We had a wonderful time and I am already looking forward to my next trip back to explore more of France!

Next up is Britain and Ireland coming up here in a couple of weeks.  I’ll be taking a bus tour with Globus and will be hosting a large group of our clients from work.   I will again share some of my experiences and pictures here on that trip.  Here is a preview of the overall trip to get everyone excited.  J  Thank you for reading!

France - Days 6 - 10: Viviers to Paris

Time for another update!

Friday, July 27, 2012 – Viviers, France
Today we started off with a relaxing morning sailing alone the Rhone from Avignon to our next destination, Viviers.  In the afternoon, I took the included tour and explored the quiet town of Viviers while Dad relaxed on the ship.  Here we had great views of the French countryside and visited the smallest cathedral in France.  At the cathedral, we were treated to a private organ recital by a local musician.
After returning to the ship, we were treated to a tasting of local sausages, cheeses, and other treats from the town of Viviers.  In the evening we had a great dinner and then enjoyed a variety show put on by the crew of the Avalon Scenery.

Saturday, July 28, 2012 – Tournon – Vienne, France
This morning we arrived into the town of Tournon, where we strolled in the rain through the local food and flower markets and visited their 16th century castle.  Then we returned to the ship for a leisurely cruising and sightseeing on our way to Vienne.  Along the way, we saw some beautiful vineyards on the hillsides and a beautiful “modern” chateau.  I also took a quick tour of the ship galley (kitchen).  It’s amazing to see the small and simple spaces from which the Chefs creates such wonderful meals.  Also this afternoon, our cruise director Jean Loup treated us to a delicious gourmet chocolate tasting.
In the late afternoon we arrived into the sizable town of Vienne where we took a quick city tour and visited another beautiful cathedral, did some window shopping and took a train up to the hilltop to check out the view of the city from above.
Tonight was movie night and as I guessed, the featured film was Chocolat.  I have seen the movie a number of time so we instead enjoyed 2 for 1 happy hour and then relaxed for the rest of the night.

Sunday, July 29, 2012 – Lyon, France
Today was a busy day!  In the morning we arrived into the large city of Lyon where we took a city tour highlighting must see Lyon.  Our tour included a visit to the hill of Fourviere and it’s beautiful Notre Dame de la Fourviere church and a stroll through the Old Town with its variety of shops and “Traboules” (hidden passageways between blocks).
After lunch we joined an option tour took a short drive to the Beaujolais region for a vineyard tour and wine tasting.  Afterward, our tour made a quick stop in the town of Oingt.  This was my favorite town on the entire trip as it was extremely clean with beautiful cobblestone streets and wonderful countryside views.
As we sailed away from Lyon, we left the Rhone river and turned on the Saone for the rest of our journey.  On our way out of Lyon we say some interesting modern buildings and enjoyed the experience of going under our lowest bridge.  This was quite a sight!  Everything on the sundeck had to be taken down and the wheelhouse (the bridge) had to be lowered to its limit.  This left us with about 6 inches of clearance.  Check out the pics!  This evening we enjoyed happy hour again as well as a wonderful dinner on the ship and then crashed for the evening.

Monday, July 30, 2012 – Macon – Tournus, France
It’s a magical day today!  We were in Macon this morning and joined an option excursion to visit the Chateau Cormatin.  The chateau is like something from a fairytale with majestic gardens, a moat and extravagantly appointed rooms.  It is an all-around perfect setting aside from the moody caretakers that were breathing down our necks.
While we visited the Chateau, our ship continued on to the town of Tournus where we met up with them after our tour.  We had some free time in the afternoon to explore Tournus but we instead elected to relax on the ship and enjoy a peaceful afternoon without any walking.
This evening, as sailed toward our final cruise destination of Chalon we got dressed up and enjoyed the Captain’s Cocktail reception and our Farewell dinner.  Toward the end up dinner, we enjoyed a Baked Alaska parade through the dining room and we had the opportunity to meet all of our service staff and thank them for a great cruise!

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 – Chalon-sur-Saone - Beaune – Paris, France
Well, we left the ship in Chalon early this morning.  We had a long bus ride today to Paris, but along the way we did make a stop in the wonderful town of Beaune in the Burgundy region.  Here we visited the fortified old town and took a tour of the Hotel Dieu, a late-medieval charity hospital.  Afterward we had some free time to explore the town on our own and a nice alfresco lunch at a local brasserie.
After another 4 hours or so on the bus we arrived in the Paris, the City of Light!  We checked-in and got comfortable at our hotel, the Pullman Montparnasse.
This evening we explored the Montparnasse neighborhood and a nice dinner at a local restaurant.
